A foreign resource is any type of content that is not guaranteed to be supported by EPUB 3 reading systems when used in EPUB content documents.

Foreign resources are the opposite of core media types, which are required to be supported.

Foreign should not be confused with remote resources, which are resources that can be hosted outside the container. (A foreign resource hosted outside the container is also considered a remote resource; they are separate designations.)
